On Sunday 7th April 2024, I will be taking part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon in aid of the Colombian Caravana.

The Colombian Caravana, of which I am a trustee, is deeply concerned about the alarming number of lawyers and human rights defenders who are targeted and killed in Colombia for their commitment to justice. Recent reports from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and Colombia’s Institute for Peace and Development Studies (INDEPAZ) highlight the persistently high rates of violence against human rights advocates in the region, with Colombia experiencing the highest figures in 2023 alone—188 human rights defenders lost their lives despite the peace deal signed in 2016.

At Caravana, we are dedicated to promoting access to justice and upholding the rule of law in Colombia. We collaborate closely with Colombian lawyers and human rights defenders to ensure the protection and respect of human rights. We understand that when their right to practice independently and serve their clients’ interests is compromised, justice itself is at risk.

As a legal professional in the UK, I am fortunate to practice my profession without fearing for my safety or that of my family. However, I recognize the privilege I have and feel compelled to take on this challenge. Despite the peace process in Colombia, attacks against human rights defenders have increased, making our work more crucial than ever.

Funds raised from this event will support the ongoing efforts of the Caravana, particularly the completion of the Report from the VIII Delegation. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a significant impact.

Without lawyers and legal professionals, there can be no justice, and no one should live in fear for simply doing their job.
