We are pleased to invite you to two public events to meet Rommel Duran Castellanos, Colombian human rights lawyer and defender at risk, president of Corporación Equipo Jurídico Pueblos (The Peoples’ Legal Team).
This will be a unique opportunity to talk to Rommel and discuss first hand his work on behalf of victims of serious human rights abuses, including extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, and torture, and on-going serious risks to human rights lawyers and other human rights defenders.
During Rommel’s visit, he will speak about the serious and continuing risks faced by human rights lawyers and other human rights defenders and the lack of adequate protection measures.
Rommel himself faces very serious threats to his life due to his work as a lawyer and has first-hand experience of the violence that he seeks to challenge through his work. Only a couple of years ago, his brother was shot and killed in the family car while with his wife and children. Rommel has also experienced harassment and arbitrary detention. In particular, in July 2017, Rommel together with a local journalist and a community leader were arrested while accompanying the Ayacucho community, during a peaceful protest. They were subjected to violence by law enforcement officials during their arrest but later released without charge.
