The Colombian Caravana submitted its report to the Global Britain and South America inquiry by the Foreign Affairs Committee into how the UK can ensure its policy towards South America is targeted most effectively.
In the submission, the Caravana focused on the current status of the Peace Process and the challenges that have emerged since the signing of the Peace Agreement; the rule of law and access to justice, including the problems facing the transitional justice system, in particular the Special Jurisdiction for Peace and the Truth Commission; and the current situation regarding the protection of human rights defenders and legal professionals.
The Caravana urged the UK government to “demand that the Colombian Government ensure that international standards for human rights and Rule of Law are fully respected and such protections where relevant are strengthened, by supporting accountability efforts in the country and the fundamental role of the legal profession in this respect”.
