We are extremely concerned to hear that human rights lawyer Juan Bautista Rivas Ramos was forced to leave Colombia for the United States of America due to continued threats and harassment, including surveillance, harassing phone calls, and death threats. The threats were allegedly connected to his petition before the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights submitted after he was informed by the Prosecutor’s Office that his request of a change of court was not possible due to the expiry of the limitation period. His petition is in relation to the Colombian state’s failure to conduct a prompt, independent, impartial, and thorough investigation into the murder of his father, human rights lawyer Domingo José Rivas Coronado, on 13 May 1990.
